Goodbye MJ

Michael Jackson

Like countless others across the web, here’s my tribute to the man who made grabbing one’s crotch socially acceptable and in a weird way kinda cool.

There’s no denying that Michael Jackson was a talented. He was just a bundle of energy. No one can argue that he was a true showman, arguably the best performer the music industry has ever seen. His signature curly hair, red jacket, black hat will never be forgotten. Ever.

My first memories of Michael Jackson stem from way back in the mid nineties, before the time MTV had every teenager hooked. My cablewala would repeatedly play the same videos over and over again. The Remember the Time video stuck in my head simply because it was played over and over. The video had a bunch of celebrities like Eddie Murphy and Magic Johnson, of which I could only recognize MJ! It was only much later that I was introduced to his other songs. Bad, Thriller, Blood on the dance floor, They don’t really care about us, Heal the world all have been an integral part of my growing up years.

Apna AR Rahman has been inspired by Michael Jackson as well. His buttoned down white shirt act in the Vande Mataram video is clearly inspired by the King of Pop. And who can forget the song Golimaar that went viral on the web as the Indian Thriller (I looked up the name of the movie- Donga). Prabhudeva who’s super flexible frame gave him the moniker Indian Michael Jackson. MJ has been a inspiration to a generation of artists all over the world. Musicians such as Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Britney amongst others have all grown up watching MJ perform. His elaborate stage performances are legendary in the performing arts world.

Michael Jackson grew up abused by Papa Joe, rose to super stardom, and had a quick fall from grace due to certain things he might or might not have done. Regardless, he will always remain a shining star in the entertainment industry. For the people who grew up listening to his music. For me when I spent my lazy summer afternoons trying to perfect my moonwalk.
