Some background on what I’ve been through yesterday. I spent an entire day in a rather pointless training class. By the time if was 5 in the pm, I had figured out all the steps in the global life cycle of a trade, tasted the best free coffee that corporate America has to offer, walked along Fifth Avenue peeking into every store that had a sale to offer, and stopped to watch some washed out tennis player (not sure who) giving tennis lessons to kids outside Rockefeller Center. And then, a coworker and former friend (yes, former, grrr), made me walk about 50 blocks because she wanted to walk alongside the river, before I could finally take the train home.
So yes, I had had a really long day. My feet have disowned me for all practical purposes. And yet, as I listened to the super awesome Love Aaj Kal soundtrack, my feet, freshly rejuventated, started tapping incessantly. Pritam FTW. Ever since the film’s theatrical trailer released, a few weeks back, I had a good feeling about this one, and not just because Deepika looks delicious in them short skirts. The soundtrack kicks off with Twist. One hearing is more than enough for anyone to love the song. I already see it to be a Mauja Hi Mauja type chartbuster for 2009. The song puts the cheesy 80′s sapera-been theme to good use. That, coupled with the liberal use of Punjabi words easily make this track the pick of the album. Neeraj Sridhar does a fabulous job here. In addition, the songs clip does complete justice to it. It appears to have been picturised in a nightclub, with Saif doing his uber cool stud act with a PYT (Florence Brudenell-Bruce) in tow. Ye Dooriyan by Mohit Chauhan is one of his typical romantic, lovey-dovey songs. It doesn’t have the Masakali magic to it though. Average at best. Chor Bazari, again by Sridhar, gives you a very 70′s feel with the hatke lyrics. Yet, the musical arrangements, give it an interesting sound. Ahun Ahun by Sridhar and Saleem Jazzy B Saleem is my favorite track on the disc. I’m looking forward to seeing its video. I’ve been told that the Ahun Ahun bit is from an old Punjabi song. Thoda Thoda Pyar by Sunidhi Chauhan appears to be shaadi-wala song. It’s catchy and it works for me. Ajj Din Chadheya by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is breezy and a mood lifter. Main Kya Hoon sung by KK is largely passable. Twist, Chor Bazari and Ahun Ahun have remixed tracks on the soundtrack, and just like the originals, kick some solid butt.
Overall, the music works. Very clubby and desi at the same time. 2 thumbs up! Can’t hardly wait for the movie. Opening 31st July at a theatre near you.
EDIT: Having seen the film recently, I feel the need to revise my views on some of the songs. The Yeh Dooriya track- very situational. I’ve been listening to it along with Aaj Din Chadheya over and over again on my iPod. Two thumbs up to the soundtrack as well as the film!

…u r good at this man…
